So, now that I feel like I am starting to be able to discern different styles, orchestras, etc., I am wanting to really delve into the music. But my cobbled together collection rarely has names, dates, etc, which is maddening. It's ridiculous to sit and hope I hear a particular piece of music somewhere where I can ask for all its dirty little secrets.
So, tango friends, how did you build your tango collections? Where did you find the music? What are the must-haves?

What I did is whenever I heard anything I especially liked, I went and asked the DJ what it was. Then I hunted down a cd with it on.
When I have music that I can't identify the names of, but have a vague idea what the orqestra is, tangostore.com is helpful, as they have little clips of each track. So you can look at all the cds by whichever artist you think it is, and listen to them till you find something which sounds right.
My personal recommendations are Canaro, Fresedo, D'Agostino, and Rodriguez. Love'em. I'm not personally a big fan of your Puglieses and Piazzolas. Heresy, I know, but there it is.
Mmmmm and D'Arienzo, Di Sarli and Biagi, Biagi, Biagi...My all time favourite recording is Biagi's Solos de Orquesta. And for something different (not necessarily danceable), Eladia Blazquez, female composer, lyricist and singer...I got most of my music from friends and some from tangostore.com. Enjoy!
